My wife is going to be working in Brandon, Florida. We need to remain in the general area (within probably 20-25 min commute). Here are some options we are looking at in order:

1) Our first choice was that we really wanted to live on the ocean, we like to walk the beach in the morning and like the calming nature of the water, but understand the ocean is far. Is there anything similar close?

2) Is there any type of decent living near any other type water in the general area?

3) Is there any type of non-conventional living in the area?

My wife and I are against purchasing a house in a traiditonal subdivision or living in an apartment complex. We might be open to a condo in the right area, a house on the water, or something unconventional. I hope I communicate what I am looking for.

I would love your input.

Gibsonton has a lot of unconventional residences that are on canals.

You might find some unconventional places to live along the Alafaia River in Riverview/Lithia.

Thanks for the responses so far. Keep them coming. Also, if anyone knows anything about Hyde Park, people keep suggesting it to me.

Hyde Park is hardly unconventional. I would suggest that it's mildly snobbish Anglo conservative WASPY Yuppies. As they age they move south into South Tampa.... <grin>

I would also recommend the Master Planned Community of Waterset. It is only a short drive to the Apollo Beach Nature Park. It's not the ocean, but it's Tampa Bay!

You might try some of the older (pre 1990s) areas of Ruskin along the canals or the Little Manatee River, or close to the beach at Little Harbor, or near E.G. Simmons Park. Also the older areas of Riverview along the Alafaia River. There are some funky, but nice non-subdivision homes in those areas, where you're not in a HOA. Out at Little Harbor, there are some condos and there are also condos on canals in Apollo Beach. That's the closest you're going to get to beach/waterfront living to Brandon, IMO, unless I'm missing something. I wouldn't recommend Gibsonton, although you can find plenty of unconventional stuff there.
