In a word......AWESOME!
The mock ups don't detail or promote those aspects of the new design very much. I think the promoters made a mistake of not making the retail, dining, and drinking amenities more obvious.

Really?

It's in the first paragragh.

The New St Petersburg Pier

"Come fish, eat, shop, paddle, gaze, stroll, run and reflect on the beauty that is – and will be – classic St. Petersburg."

And then again below in its own section......all on the first page.

"Dine!

What could be better than dinner overlooking the water at The Pier? Try out the new restaurant on the Pier’s hub. Great food, and an even better view with the city’s waterfront and the sweeping iconic Pier canopy in clear view."

Granted the video itself is lacking in those respects though.

I really don't think all that will happen. This design is already WAY over-budget and I expect it will go over even more. Then there are maintenance costs which are going to be very high, and it will only have a 75 year life span after all that money spent. It really does not make sense.

Don't get me wrong, my husband and I were BLOWN AWAY watching the media presentation and looking at the scale model. But as often happens with these things, they are just a vision, and the reality ends up being something so scaled down that it doesn't even resemble the original design. After reading both sides of the issue I really think they need to come up with something else, simpler, more user friendly and less expensive to build and maintain.

I see what you mean. Maybe they should just demolish it and put in a simple fishing pier.

Because the crowds that would enjoy that don't live anywhere near that area! On one hand.
Do a demographic search to see who the Santa Monica pier is directed at, and then search the demographics in St Pete! Plus, that would be considered "advancement" and the people in charge are allergic to progress!

i think the person who said the Lens is "an art piece" says it all

we don't need an art piece, and we don't want an art piece

we need a pier that people will love to use, shop at, eat at, stroll at

i think its very interesting that the chosen architects of the Lens are based in california, a state with literally DOZENS of great piers all along the coastline.

and yet none of the great piers in california look like this Lens thing

nor would any california city or town AGREE to build such a ridiculous looking "art piece" on their shore

Have you not noticed that because you are an outsider, without a valid opinion, compared to people who are truly, longtime, invested in this area, your drivel is basically ignored? I think you speak just to hear yourself. You are no different from dozens, no hundreds, no thousands, no.....tens of thousands of people who come here for your Pot of Gold and even though you have vacationed here DOZENS of times you don't know squat about what is good for St. Petersburg, or anywhere else around here, except for your little East Lake Homoginized hood. My free advice to you, worth just what you pay for it....it is better to remain quiet and appear ignorant, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt. Get a few years, or decades under your belt and THEN you might have a Valid opinion!
