Great question. I love the beach, but since we live an hour away we don't get there as often as I'd like. In fact, that's my New Year's resolution this year, to get to the beach more often. I usually end up going to Little Harbor, which is 20 minutes away, when I need a beach fix. Oddly enough every time we go on vacation we still head to beachy locations via an all inclusive or cruise.

JasonAnc, I've been watching both of my parents, who live on the beach, deal with skin cancer this year and it's kind of scary to see your folks cut up. I sure don't want to follow suit and have found myself a bit more cautious about sun exposure lately.

Yeah, it happened to my mom when she was 42 (61 now). She had a big chunk cut out of her thigh above her knee. Couldn't bend her leg right for quite some time.

We all got kinda freaked out because the Dr f-ed up her appts repeatedly and then bumped her back, so it was known to be cancerous for almost 3 months before they actually did something about it.

She uses sunscreen now and all, but those crazy old birds bought a big place on a canal and are shopping for a sailboat.

Freaked me out because I was one of those kids and young adults who never wears sunscreen, because I don't seem to burn, and was always out in the sun because I was pretty athletic back then. At least I almost always wore a shirt thank God. Now I kind of avoid the sun, and when I know I'm going to be out for more than a few minutes, I use sunscreen.

This area has so much more to offer than just the beach, especially for families. There is just so much to do here, but going to the beach is always loved by the kids. Personally, I prefer my pool... a much easier in and out. But it is nice to know the beach is always there when we have the urge to go.

If Floridians cared enough to fix their state's economy (in terms of lack of attracting upper middle class) and especially the ongoing transportation woes and sprawl (which I suspect is directly linked to the first issue) central Florida in particular would be tip top on a list of good places to raise a family in the whole country. But right now in the real world, people who are looking to maximize their earning potential and opportunities, Florida is a huge compromise. Especially for families into the urban lifestyle, which younger generations lean heavily towards. Florida is way behind the curve, with some parts (like Tampa Bay area) being further behind than others.
