I went to visit a friend, who was from Ohio. He was staying at a hotel 1/2 mile from Publix. We both went to the store to buy some late night food. We both noticed Publix had an armed security guard as you exited the store.

Is anyone familiar with the area. I do know downtown is an expensive area to live at. I can't understand why they need a guard.

The Publix I used to visit (Missouri and Highland in Clearwater...one of the converted Albertson's stores) has an armed guard on duty as well.

Yes I have been there. I always thought the guard was there because of the huge homeless population in Clearwater.

That would be a Publix in South Tampa. Downtown Tampa has no supermarkets.

The Publix is 5 blocks from where the lightning play in the NHL. South Tampa is near the Airport. Do you need a map?

So, just to be clear, Hyde Park is in Downtown Tampa now?

I think they're thinking of multiple stores. There is no Publix downtown (yet), but there is going to be a new one (and Downtown's first supermarket) going in Channelside. South Tampa does start around the airport and it stretches all the way to Bayshore. And Publix doesn't stay open very late, but Wal-Marts and (I believe) some Winn Dixies do stay open later/24 hours.
