Granted, a Runzheimer report was not cheap, but it took all the voodoo out of the "Hey, you're not going to be paying me enough to live in my new location" discussion.

that website has a sample report between Tampa and DC, they show the difference in income being 17%, not 200%.
Actually what the report does not consider is the wealth bracket. Poor people spend all their money on housing and food, while middle class spends a big percentage on cars, electronics, fashion, furniture, hobby, traveling. These items cost the same everywhere. For example if 50% of my income I spend on luxurious goods, 50% on food and housing, then if food and housing costs 17% less, then it only saves 17% of 50% = 8.5% on income. Slaves and peasants worked for food and shelter, not tech workers.

200% = what most realtors, employers say
17% = the reality

Cost of living (COL) is not a good comparison for salaries. Standard of Living (SOL) is better for middle class.
Instead, the remainder part after spending on living expenses, should match.
For modern middle class, good quality food and shelter is a given (non-negotiable), and what we can afford on the top of that (luxury goods) is what matters.

Income tax equation:
=(B9*(D9)/100)+(9526*0.1)+(32174*0.12)+(43799*0.22)+(IF(B9>= 82500,1,0)*(IF(B9<157500,1,0)*((B9-82500)*0.24)))+(IF(B9>=157500,1,0)*(IF(B9<200000,1 ,0)*(((B9-157500)*0.32)+(74999*0.24))))+(IF(B9>=200000,1,0)* (((B9-200000)*0.35)+(42500*0.32)+(74999*0.24)))

Actually the matching salary between 2 locations with equal savings, also depend on what kind of monthly/daily expenses you have, and that mostly depends on whether you are single or support a family. For example childcare might cost 2-3x as much in San Francisco as in Dallas.

I'm staying in Dallas until next May given I have a big work project I want to finish (and they gave me a big raise), so I have a bit of time to make a decision.

Tampa's job market for tech is really booming. I am getting a lot of recruiter action without even trying. I doubt I'd make that much less in Tampa than Dallas - frankly. Tampa is still on my list but I'm exploring other options. I was in Atlanta a few weeks ago and I really liked it, but I feel there are a lot of tradeoffs to living there.

I'm definitely leaving Dallas, but I'm thinking it's becoming more likely that I'll end up back in the Northeast (NYC, DC, or Chicago) where I likely belong. Most important for me is to have a decent lifestyle and singles scene, and Dallas is all married people and suburban sprawl. Even on Friday night, I went out with some 20 year old friends of mine -- all in couples. One divorced <30 guy that lives in South Lake!! (cougarville lol).

I don't understand the South where most guys get married in their 20s and own a home by the time they are 28 like its the 1950s... Where is everyone's sense of adventure.

Yeah, I sincerely doubt you'd like living in Tampa.
