Hello, has anyone done it themselves without a pool company? We want to hire different contractors and save money. Is it doable? Will we get permits as such? Thanks.

That could be a trying adventure. You want to be the General Contractor and sub contract the various trades. I would rather have someone who does it every day and has a good track record.

Its more than hiring sub contractors.

Unless you plan on attempting to forego some permits and/or use some unlicensed contractors, I don't see how that would save any money.

It would save some money to eliminate the skim a GC would take on the job, but unless you're an experienced project manager and have an established relationship with the subcontractors you're planning on using, you're in for a real "bag 'o' hurt".

Also understand that as the owner and a one-time customer of any and all of the subs, they have no incentive to prioritize your job, because you won't be a source of future business. In other words, you'll be at the back of the line and will have no leverage to "encourage" the subs to complete the job.

I would liken this to an attorney defending himself in court. It's a bad idea in so many ways the potential for success is extremely low.
