Where did you get the idea it was a "vibrant, young artistic community"? Parts of St. Pete, maybe, but I've never seen Ybor as being any of that. I've always thought of it as clubs and tourista sort of stuff.

Never liked the area. Always been full of crime and run down homes. And that is going back from the 1960's.

Yeah I never thought of Ybor as a place to live, and I'm a bit confused as to why OP would move there without first getting a feel for it. It's kind of run down. Looks like they are cleaning it up a bit, but I can't imagine living there.

Ybor has not been good since probably the 1950s, when it was still like a working town. My dad and uncles worked there for many years and it was NOTHING like it is today. While it went through a "rennaisance" if you will back in the 90s, it has become a run down area of bars and sketchy businesses; nowhere I would ever even want to visit now, sad to say. I think it takes a certain type of personality to want to live there. It almost seems like a "third world country" to me now, and remember, I grew up in West Tampa and my dad worked there.

To me, very sad. Had a lot of potential but it went south.

Besides the run down aspect, I found the area to be lacking character in general. I didn’t really find the establishments charming, just rather touristy and generic. I found myself bored quite often as mentioned.

At the moment I’m living with my mom to save money. I’m a bit embarrassed about it but I could never get ahead in Tampa and didn’t like it. I’m 27 and she lives in the small community of Boca Grande, FL.

Don't be embarrassed. Save and invest everything you can at your age and you will be able to retire early.
