My family and I are staying in St. Petersburg (Hilton - Bayfront) for a long weekend (Wed-Sun). We plan to take our 19 month old to the Tampa zoo on Thursday. What else would you recommend we do? Any suggestions on great places to eat that are kid-friendly? Thanks so much!

Busch Gardens is fun and there are other things to do instead of riding rides (shows and so forth). The Aquarium also.

Someone who actually has kids can give you better advice than I can but for starters... there are lots of kid friendly chain restaurants in the area, a lot of the usual suspects.

As for things to do... Lowry Park Zoo(aka the Tampa Zoo) is a really great small zoo. Lots of great exhibits and you can get really close to the animals. I've been to both the National Zoo in D.C. and the San Diego Zoo many times but Lowry Park seems so much more intimate. You'll have a good time.

Sunken Gardens is a nice little place to wonder through and not far from where you're staying. It's on 4th St. North in the Garden District. Right next to it is Great Explorations Kids Museum. You can check their websites for fees and locations...

The St Pete Pier just off the bayfront has some restaurants and shops and a small aquarium.

There are some nice aquariums here... The Florida Aquarium in the Channelside area of Tampa is great, also has a kids' play area. The Clearwater Marine Aquarium near Clearwater Beach is a rescue oriented rehab center for dolphins and sea turtles.

Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks is a neat little Greek fishing village to walk around and shop and eat Greek food with the family. John's Pass Village in Madeira Beach has a little boardwalk and lots of shops and some restaurants on the water. Sarasota's Armand Circle a ways south of St. Pete is also a nice little area to walk around to eat and shop. And of course there are lots of great beaches and parks to choose from. There's a nightly sunset celebration at Pier 60 on Clearwater Beach that great for families. Worth checking out if you're in the neighborhood.

Your timing is good for the (click) Florida Strawberry Festival. Have a shortcake and enjoy the entertainment. The weather should be terrific!

Yeah I didn't even think about that. One warning though, traffic can get extremely heavy on I-4 getting to the Strawberry Festival and crowds are big, so be prepared if you go.
