I drink beer south of Tampa on the beach all the time and it is legal. No bottles it says. Guess the Tampa area is more of a police area. Not a fan of being that strict. Good to know, because Tampa is on my radar.

Be careful on St. Pete Beach. Alcohol isn't allowed on the beach. We've been there a lot over many years. I've seen the beach cops make people dump their beer and coolers plenty of times. I always mix up a few drinks in our room, and put my drink in cup with a lid. I've never had a problem. Same with beer--pour it into some other kind of covered cup. It's a pain for a beer, but better than running into a problem.

When we're on the beach we tend to drink margaritas.
I mix up a few really vicious ones with tequila,Cointreau and freshly-squeezed lime juice and keep them cold in a couple of 1.8l flasks.
For a passing cop we could just be drinking fruit juice unless it's late in the afternoon by which time we're all laughing our nuts off.
I suspect the police are more vigilant during Spring Break.
I see them take a wander through the PCI at busy times but I doubt they'd be interested in old farts like us.

It might be hard for some to imagine but there used to be bon fires on both sides (Tampa and St Pete side) of the Courtney Campbell Causeway every night of the week. The Causeway would be lit up from one side to the other, smoke was so thick it was like driving through fog.
