I'm relocating from the DC area down to FL in the next couple of months. I'm likely going to be renting a place and I really want to be VERY near the beach... like within a half mile or so I think. My folks live up near Wesley Chapel, so I've been down there several times before. I've been to St Pete and Clearwater beach areas to hang out and eat/drink a few times and liked them, but my question is this:

If you could choose to live along the beach anywhere between Clearwater and St Pete beach, where would you choose to live and why? Which are the coolest beaches with the most stuff around and/or to do?

I'm a single professional, late 30's, no kids, work from home so commuting is not an issue. I'm not a big partier, but wouldn't mind having a few cool beach bars close that I can hit once in a while or when friends visit. Any input would be greatly appreciated!!

Personally I like Pass-a-Grille Beach on the southern most tip of St. Pete Beach, its a quaint little fishing/beach village, with beautiful white sand beaches, small beach homes, bed and brekfasts and inns, a small main street with art galleries, restaurants and bars, and its on the beach trolley line that goes all the way to Clearwater Beach along the Gulf.

Another vote for Pass-A-Grille. Between St. Pete Beach and Clearwater Beach I'd choose St. Pete. It seems less crowded and it doesn't seem to get as much Spring Break traffic.

*although I've never lived in either. I've only visited on the weekends.

I did a little Googling and found this nice website with pretty pix and some info on Pass-a-Grille:

Pass-a-Grille

Haven't been there in years, need to make a visit soon!

In order of personal preference, I'd say Pass-A-Grille, and then St. Pete Beach. I've been researching both areas because, like you, I also want to live in a beach community.

About the only thing that I would add concerning those two choices is the availability of places on the market; there seems to be more for sale in nearby Treasure Island, rather than in the two choices above. But since you are going to be renting, you may find a different situation (and I have not looked at the availability of rentals at all).

Good luck on making your choice; I'm sure you are going to love it there.

Thanks for everyone's input. I appreciate it. Yeah, I had a friend that lived on about 12th street in Passe-A-Grille and I went to visit him a couple of times. I got pretty jealous when we would walk about 3 block and be on those beautiful beaches!! I think I'm going to have to do some recon when I get down there!! Thanks!

Pass A Grille without a doubt.
My daughter lived there for 3 yrs. She found her very affordable rental by scouting out the neighborhood for rent signs.

Another vote for Pass-a-Grille, though I don't think there is much nightlife. You wouldn't be far from Downtown St. Pete or any of the beach communities, so I think it would be an okay trade-off. Pass-a-Grille is actually a district of St. Pete Beach, though it is quite distinct.
