The strangest gift I received while teaching was a turtle with a bow taped on its back on a platter surrounded by lettuce. The child had found the turtle outside and raised it for me. Well, at least that is what the translator told me when she asked the mom about the gift. The turtle was quite large. I kept him in my bathtub for one night. I released him the next day. It was really a thoughtful but odd gift. This student and his mom were one of my favorites.
Our town just got a WM about a yr ago, so I have been giving WM cards. I figure its got a lot of variety there. If nothing else, they can use it for groceries.
So a gift card taped to a box of girl scout cookies would be appreciated as an end-of-year gift?
Okay, now you just made it even better. Girl scout cookies alone would be a great gift
Well, mine's not really strange, but it really moved me.
During my student teaching, I had a very nice LD kid (8th grade), and I was always the "point guy" for helping him out with reading and figuring stuff out. Well, one day, he came in with two apples from his parents' orchard. My heart almost melted in my chest. Here I was just helping answer questions, and I never thought that making time for him was a big deal, but it made a big difference to him.
I always knew I wanted to be a teacher, more or less, but if I had any doubts, that incident blew those doubts away.
