When I worked in the after school program, I got a gift certificate for a local supermarket. Now I know we TA's don't make a lot of money, but....... Or maybe it was because I am a size 2? I don't know. Strange. The teacher did not get this from this child.

maybe they did not know what to give you, but knew this would be useful.

Maybe they did not have a lot of money, and were re gifting it.

My cousin is a teacher and I do crack up hearing some of the gifts she gets, which she promptly tries to figure out how she will re gift.

Now I give my son's teachers gift cards.

Good for them, easy if they want to regift them.

Last year I got curtains from one of my students' mothers. Really random. I'm guessing she realized they didn't fit or she didn't like them and gave them to me lol

Giftcards I don't care where they are from or how much or little they are for. They are greatly appreciated.

Most of my gifts end up at our SPCA thrift shop. You can only have so many things with apples on them.

The best gift a parent can give is to become truly involved in the day-to-day workings of a school. If enough parents were around the really bad administrators AND teachers would be easy to spot and would be spotted by multiple witnesses with a vested interest AND with legal standing.

You cannot be legally kept out of a school that your child currently attends, unless you've caused trouble there before. And if the "trouble-causing" charge was unfair, there are things you can do about it.

Just be there!

Our town just got a WM about a yr ago, so I have been giving WM cards. I figure its got a lot of variety there. If nothing else, they can use it for groceries.

So a gift card taped to a box of girl scout cookies would be appreciated as an end-of-year gift?

I am there when I can be. I have 3 at the school plus a 1-yr-old at home, so I have worked with the teachers to figure out when I would be helpful and when I would be a hindrance.

The strangest gift I received while teaching was a turtle with a bow taped on its back on a platter surrounded by lettuce. The child had found the turtle outside and raised it for me. Well, at least that is what the translator told me when she asked the mom about the gift. The turtle was quite large. I kept him in my bathtub for one night. I released him the next day. It was really a thoughtful but odd gift. This student and his mom were one of my favorites.
