Lovely photos. The museum is wonderful to visit at any time of the year.
The most direct route is straight up I-75 from Knoxville. There's a huge billboard that says "Museum of Appalachia, next exit." Get off there and go right. It's on the left.
Across the highway from the entrance to the museum is the Appalachian Arts and Crafts Center. Stop in. They have some wonderful things at much lower prices than usual. Everything from pottery to stained glass, paintings, woodworking, lovely things.
They also have lessons. I took pottery wheel classes there. There's also a Wednesday afternoon quilting bee and potluck lunch.
Do read the history of the museum on its website. It was created and maintained for years by one man who wanted to preserve the past. He received no government or public funds.

Well, I was going to just give you a rep for the cute photos, but the thing won't let me (" . . . must spread the love around . . . ").

So . . . thanks for the nice photos.

The one I used for these photos is a Nikkon Coolpix 5700, 5 megapixels, 8x zoom. It's an older digital camera (2002) and a little heavy (512 g/18.1 oz)for me. I usually wind up tossing 10 times more photos than I take because I can't hold it steady and I have graduated lenses in my eyeglasses and rely heavily on the camera to know it's in focus. I have to use Photoshop or Paint Shop to sharpen the images, always, because of my eyeglasses.

I have another lighter digital camera (one I used for the Secret City Festival Photos) but the batteries weren't charged at the time I went to Norris.

Next camera I get will have some kind of stabilizer. I'm taking a camera class that starts in 2 weeks. I'm hoping it will help me find one that is right for me (shaky hands and bad eyesight).

Is that why they are so sharp? I have a HP 5.0 MP and the picture comes out terrible. I used SLRs for years, had many photos published, but I can't seem to get a handle on digital. I keep trying to put my face up to the screen and can't see anything at all outside during daylight hours.

I really want to buy a camera that is both, but they are HUGE money right now.

Default Another Fowl Question

You guys helped me to identify the furry fowl at the Museum of Appalachia. Can anyone please tell what these birds in Cades Cove are? I thought it was some kind of turkey because of the bird's face but then one flapped his wings like he actually might fly and he didn't have that whole back end array of feathers like a turkey or anything hanging on his neck. They weren't penned up anywhere if that helps. As you can probably tell, I'm bird illiterate.

Yep, that's I was going to say, hens or young birds. The adult toms are the ones you're thinking of, LauraC . . . the ones you always see on illustrations around Thanksgiving.

A whole flock of the things wander around our place in the country in Montgomery County.

Thank you Tinman and Alleycat. I guess the black and blue tinged wing color threw me. I know they looked like food (plump) so I was ruling out anything exotic and I've seen peacocks before and knew they didn't have a face like a peacock (or the feathers).

I went back to Cades Cove on Halloween to take some photos for a class and I have to say if you can't find critters and birds when you go there you can't be looking hard enough. The deer are downright brazen/have no fear but even the birds aren't skittish. I'm still waiting to see a snake in the Cove.
