I am an African American and my family has deep roots in Iron City TN. I have been doing some geneology studies and it always takes me back to Iron City. My family migrated back and forth between Iron City and Greenhill AL. I would like to find out more about African American history in Iron City. My descendants are Allens. In the early 1900's one of my relatives Sallly Allen was supposedly ran out of Iron City because I believe she killed her husband who was well known and liked in the town. She barely escaped a lynch mob, so they say. Does anyone remember any stories about some of the old African Americans who resided there? Did they have a school? What side did they live on?

Iron City is not any different than any other city. I lived there all my life until 2005 and now I live in Mississippi. The crazy people that made Iron City Blues needs there heads checked out. And some of thr city officals helped on making it. You have your crime just like any other city. And some of the main people in the video like the guy riding with the singer has been in alot of trouble his self and he is not even from Iron City. The video made me sick. Why did'nt they make on of the time the F4 torando came through and everyone pulled together and helped each other. I think it made them feel big but all it really did was **** people off and make Iron City people look stupid. But I just consider the ones who acted stupid and looked stupid are stupid. Sorry if I made anyone made but this is America and freedom of speech.

I dont remember any Allens but there are the Mortons that live close to the water tower. You might could check the city hall in Iron City and they may be able to help you.

Janie if you know my mom call info and get her # and then you can get mine from her

I called my mom she has lived in Iron City all her life. She doesn't remember Sally Allen. But I do remember two African Americans men that lived beside me when I was about 5 or 6.I use to go and sit on there porch and listen to there stories they told and listen to them play music and of course we would eat and drink lemonade. Blue made the best lemonade, they were great people both of them. One of the guys was called Bisquit and the other was Blue Allen but Blue was his nickname. He wife was Hazel Allen I think she worked in the medical field. They we divorced. A few others were Dixie, Mary Kathryn but I don't remember there last names. My mom said she would talk to my granny and see if she remembers anyone else. I know they had a church going out on the ridge because my mom and some of her friends would go and listen ti them sing by sitting outside by the windows while church services were going on. SHe said some went to school in Mt. Pleasant Tn then later some at Iron City School. She thinks HAzel Allen moved to Nashville years ago. As far as we know there are not anymore Allens in that area. There are 3 families there which are the Mortons. I wish I knew a way to contact you so I could give you my grannys # so you could speak with her.She is 84 and she probley could tell you alot more. I hope what little I told you might help.Sorry I could not help more.

Iron City, Tennessee.

As of the year 2006...

Estimated population: 377

Listed county: Lawrence county

The nearest city with 50,000 plus people is Decatur, AL.

Nearby towns/cities include St. Joseph, TN... Loretto, TN... St. Florian, AL... etc.

And I imagine it's not too far from Lawrenceburg.

The most common occupation for males in Iron City is metal and plastic workers. Also laborers and material movers. There're also some truck drivers, driver/sales workers, constructior laborers, etc.

Common female occupations are laborers and material movers... also textile, apparel, and furnishing workers. You'll also find some teachers... suprervisors... waitresses... and personal appearance workers.

I got this information from city-data.com.

Default Thanks to All!

Thank you to all. I am aware of the Mortons in Iron City, TN they are my kin folk and descendants of the Allens. I talked with Mrs. Virginia Morton last year over the phone, she was in poor health, she told me as much as she could but she is not a big talker. I am the author of the Allen Family History Website mentioned. I wanted to hear from others about Iron City, TN to get more information. Iron City plays a vital role in my family history. I am grateful to all who have posted information. Especially about Blue Allen more than likely an unknown offshoot of our family that I will further trace. This is fascinating news. God Bless All!

Sharon7,
I hope you will find what you are looking for in Iron City. When you get there Miss Virgina lives close to my mom and my granny. My moms name is Cricket Kimbrell and my granny is Inell Short you can go visit them and they can tell you about Blue Allen. I remember him so well and I remember his honey and bisquits we use to eat on his front porch. Take care and good luck with your research.
