I'm considering a move to the southeast, TN looks pretty good from here in NJ. I would like to narrow down areas to visit and consider. I have a ways to go before retirement so I'd like to be within an hour of somewhere with jobs (IT) and to be near or preferably on a lake or river good for boating. What parts of the state or what towns should I consider? What lakes or rivers are good for recreational boating with waterfront property or easy public access?

You should look for jobs in Nashville, Chattanooga and Knoxville and look near where you find the best job. All the TVA lakes have public access points. If your job is remote then Knoxville has the widest variety of lakes within an hour.

Center Hill Lake has a lot of very nice housing developments and will put you within an hour of Nashville which is the economic engine for the state. Nashville has been ranked as one of the best cities for tech workers. In addition, Center Hill Lake is a stone's throw from Cookeville which itself has a thriving IT scene thanks in large part to being home to the state's flagship technological university and home to a large government contractor's technology gateway (SAIC). Cookeville is also wildly popular with retirees. Within 40 miles of town there's over 1200 miles of lake shoreline and over 100 waterfalls.

Here's a sampling of lakefront homes around Center Hill Lake that have recently sold.

Goodness.... I shudder to think of someone commuting to Nashville from Center Hill lake on a daily basis. It could work for a job where one visits the mothership once a week or so.

I do it, and it takes me 45 minutes to get to my job in Nashville's eastern 'burbs. It's a super easy commute.

Commuting to Lebanon is a different story compared to actually commuting to Nashville. Downtown Nashville is another 40 minutes past Lebanon and that's without factoring in traffic. At rush hour, that trip can easily take an hour or more. So to downtown Nashville, you'd be looking at a daily commute of 90 minutes to 2 hours depending on traffic.

I commute into Davidson County near the airport.

Not entirely sure what locals consider SE TN, but I would check out Madisonville or Maryville. My wife and I are going to relocate there soon to be closer to her family, and I'm changing my AFSC to acquire a new job on McGhee Tyson. Madisonville was cheaper, an hours drive to Knoxville, close to the river, within an hours drive to the airport, and still relatively cheap.
