Isn't that an interesting state law? No beer can be sold on election day in TN.

...or liquor (I believe). I think it's funny. The law has been on the books forever. I suppose the legislature back then felt that the populace was too stupid to by their booze the day BEFORE the election so they could get tanked up!

I can't speak to the liquor but I bet you're right. I was at the grocery and saw the sign there. Only beer for sale in grocery stores here in TN (another pet peeve) I can't believe we can't pick up a bottle of wine with the dinner steaks.

LOL on tanked up!

Um, dunno about the beer law but we bought vodka, Jose Cuervo and three bottles of wine a few hours ago!

You probably bought it after the polls close. Tennessee isn't the only one that does that. When I worked at a convenience store back in the late 70s here in Kentucky, here's what I was told. Back in "the day" a candidate could bribe someone with alcohol for their vote. Get them good and drunk and they would vote for you. So no alcohol sales during the hours the polls were open.

That is what I've always been told too. These days I think one needs to throw a few back before they cast their vote!

That's only in certain counties such as Sevier.

Or do what my cousin does at his tavern on election day. He sells you the plastic cup and gives you the beer! He's been hauled into court several times and he's never lost!

People were buying beer in the grocery stores in Memphis around 5pm yesterday. So the law must not be state-wide or there must be some other loophole to it. Liquor stores were open and cars were out front as well.
