We are looking for a place in the Knoxville area to relocate to from upstate NY. We would like to live on the outskirts of the city with easy access to hospitals and doctors (especially cardio and rheumatology). We would like to find a small house in a quiet neighborhood. We are on a fixed income. Also, we would like to know what are extra costs added to your living expenses to be considered (besides phone, internet) like water, sewer, trash. We are pampered here in NY where that is an automatic included in rent item and am finding that is not so elsewhere. Any help would be appreciated.

Good news: no state income tax, comparatively low utility bills and vehicle tags
Bad news: sales tax in Knoxville is 9.25%

Depending on location...you may have to pay more for garbage pickup, HOA, even an annual premium on fire/ambulance response. Within the city limits, most civil services are paid for by your property taxes (which are higher than county residents). In Knox County, property taxes are lower, but you pay a la carte for similar services from private companies.

Overall, cost of living in Knoxville compares well with NYS, and the climate is easier on the bones.

I'm not too familiar with areas really close to Knoxville. However, I gotta tell you that many people love to retire in Cookeville, TN. But, it is about an hour and a half from Knoxville. The town is not the city life that you had in NY, but it is beautiful here. Also, the people here are great, and they just recently made the hospital a lot bigger. In addition, there is a nice selection of restaurants and shopping. The town is growing. Many people see it becoming larger in the future. Plus, the cost of living is very cheap. It wouldn't hurt looking into unless you are set on living in or near Knoxville.

As far as close to Knoxville, many retirees absolutely love Maryville. You may want to check it out.

I do not know ~ unless its the Cumberland Plateau attraction. Is is usually listed as the coldest spot in the area by the Nashville TV weather reports.
It is not far from Knoxville and then just a few miles down the road is Cookeville. I suspect two reasons being seniors like golf and the Crossville area has several golf courses. Seniors like theatre and the Cumberland County Playhouse puts on outstanding productions. I notice that one business report list Crossville as number 4 in the nation and they seem to point to the mountains as being a main attraction.

Crossville = retirement town.

The draw? Tons of good places to eat, plenty of beautiful sites, it's the golf capital of the state, they've got quite a few manmade lakes, great school system, plenty of shopping, and the huge HUGE 127 yard sale goes through the heart of Crossville.

Once every year for a few weeks in August (or late July) people set up booths all up highway 127 from illinois to georgia and since Crossville is such an open location and it's known for it's retirement community/flea markets it's a prime spot to sell and buy trinkets and what-nots and all that.

It's a slow moving place too so if you're retired you're not in a hurry...drives the younger folks (myself included) crazy :P But it's not a bad place overall...
