It is disturbing to hear what Al Franken says here 4 minutes into the video, about medical costs in McAllen, TX. How the for profit hospitals and clinics are driving costs up twice as much as in El Paso and three times as much as at Mayo Clinic.

I have verified his statement that El Paso and McAllen, TX both have almost identical demographics profiles (in terms of race and median household income, El Paso has a slight edge in education levels).

I have to say I respect his statesmanship in the way he responds to the hostile group in this interview.

Maybe there are some other factors not mentioned to affect the cost of healthcare in the McAllen area.. I for one can think of at least one., the elevated cost of malpractice insurance due to frivolous lawsuits. There may be others such as greed. It would be nice to find out the true reasons.

Sorry, it appears that I forgot to link to the video of the discussion. Here it is.

YouTube - Franken Talks Down Angry Mob

There are factors he explains in this video, the hospitals and medical clinics are owned by the Doctors who profit from excessive costs and extra charges.

I have considered the source, after viewing this video of him speaking it is obvioius that Al Franken is very intelligent, well spoken and has researched the facts.

Default Another possible factor?

Could the cost of treating illegal aliens, or people who can't pay bills be a factor for businesses making up shortfalls by raising rates?

Both cities are on the border and have almost identical demographics, so why would there be any difference in the number of illegals being treated?
