Recently I got back from a drive to San Diego from San Antonio and have to say Texas rest stops along IH10 are

~ the best maintained
~ the cleanest
~ the best landscaped
~ the brightest illumination at night
~ have wifi

New Mexico, Arizona and California's are the pits

Yep Texas rest stops along interstate 10 are very nice. My favorite was the one I stopped at that was on the way to Fort Stockton. And the worst one was a tiny one outside of Big Lake that had tons of fire ants. lol

The last time I made a trip on I-10 from TX to Cali I noticed that a lot of the non TX rest stops were closed, I remember a few in New Mexico that were closed completely. I figured it was due to budget issues.

The TX Welcome center on I-10 coming into TX from LA is amazing, it's super clean with paid staff and just about everything you could ask for.

thank you for saying that! I've noticed that too. I've made that trip before. Just recently, I noticed how most of ariz' were CLOSED due to their budget shortfall. I don't recall much of the 10's since it crosses NM only halfway across the State.

Texas has some wonderful rest stops located along freeways. But numerous rest stops on lesser roads with picnic tables and trash cans but no toilet or water.

A rest stop with no toilet is useless in my opinion.

Who wants to stop and have a picnic if there is no place to relieve themselves! ? !

Let's see, a mediocre lager and an imported pest from South America that you can't get rid of...Yep, Texas ought to do fine as an independent republic again.

The rest stops along Hwy 287 and on up across the Panhandle are great - they are themed to the locale in which they are located, almost like mini-museums, and the ones near Quanah even have a fishing hole ( they also have signs that say 'watch out for rattlesnakes' but that's just reality). Rest stops are a great boon up in that part of the world.

The reststop on 280 by Stonewall and the LBJ ranch is really nice, a scaled down version of that welcome center talked about by earlier post.
