Once you supplied the information to them, how difficult was it to get your $$ refunded to you by them? How quick was the turnaround time?

A few years ago I received a letter notifying me that I had unclaimed property sitting in escrow with the state of Texas and that, for an unacceptably large percentage of the unclaimed amount, the undersigned entity would go through all the hassle and headache of retrieving the money and delivering into my possession.

On a whim, I googled "Texas Unclaimed Property". Claimittexas.org popped up. I was able to quickly identify my items (this may be more difficult if your name is John Smith and you have lived in 20 different places in Texas) and place a request with the state for delivery. In spite of the requirements listed on the website, a photocopy of your driver license is probably sufficient for them to release your property to you. They take a percentage of the money as consideration for holding it safely.

It's actually a fairly easy and painless process.

My husband got a call from some lady a few years ago saying she saw our business name on the list and just wanted to let us know. WOW!!!! He thanked her and all. He turned in the paperwork and within weeks he got the check in the mail. It was pretty easy.

I used to check every now and then for anyone w/ our last name of family names just to see. Never saw any and then the one time I didn't......... we had something. LOL!!!

for about 8 years I knowingly let $190 sit in the unclaimed funds. It was money due my deceased husband and gathering the documents needed to claim the money (certified copy of death certificate, copy of my marriage license to him, copy of his probated will, copy of my marriage certificate because I had remarried) was more trouble than worth it. They wanted certified copies of everything and I only had photocopies. Every couple of years I'd renew the claim and send a letter that if I had to drive down to FTW, park, stand in line and pay for certified copies in addition to the gas and time....it wasn't worth it. At some point last year I guess they were reviewing old files and they just sent me the money.....(which I gave to my former DH's daughter).

If your claim is more than $100 they help themselves to 1.5%. I also just found out that I have somehow failed to claim $19.00 over the last couple of years.

Who gets to keep 1.5%? We got every penny from the state that was ours w/ no claim or finders fee. You can easily do the form yourself and not pay someone a "finders fee" for it.

Was your claim in excess of $100? If not, the State of Texas does not assess a fee. If so, they keep 1.5% of the claim amount.

If you somehow get duped into granting "agency" to one of these scam operations, they will hit you with an enormous "finders fee". Total ripoff that preys on people who are not aware of how easy this is.
