My hat or cap would come off at the table for food.

It's called manners.

Son, either you ain't a Texan or your Ma wore combat boots an' shaved - ain't NO self-respecting Texan wearing his hat in church.

Indoors - hats off, unless you are attending a service at a synagogue in which case wear a kippah. Christian church - hats OFF OFF OFF OFF! Jeez, how disrespectful can you be.
National Anthem - hats off.
Benediction, whether indoors or outdoors - hats off.
Funeral passes by - hats off.
Sitting down outdoors at a picnic or church luncheon - hats off.
Standing on the sidewalk eating a quick bite from a food cart - hat can remain on.

This is basic ABC manners your mother, aunt, or grandmother should have taught you before you passed five years of age. It doesn't matter whether Texan or not. We're all Americans and this is what well mannered people do.

Next?

geezz....hats off while eating indoors..seriously?

I'm a native Texan....lived here my whole life and the only places I think is inappropriate to wear a hat/cap is at church, funeral, during the national anthem, at a really nice restaurant, etc.

I don't care at all if someone wears a ball cap inside a Chill's or the Galleria or "inside" a ball park.

With that said, i do believe in dressing appropriately for certain religious holidays (i.e. Christmas). I know many multi-generational Texans, and proud Southerns, who wear a style of clothes, and their cap/hat, to these holidays as if it was just another day in the country.

A man should never wear a hat of any kind indoors. As soon as you walk throuh the door, all hats should come off.

I realize "manners" are changing, but if you are sitting down with a group of people and you are the only one wearing a hat, then take the damn hat off unless you have some kind of sickening skin condition. I thought my (former) Texas country-boy son in law looked like an uneducated inconsiderate mannerless fool eating with his hat on, and I was right.
