You can go from reggae, to rock, to world music on one block!!!!!!! You may get lucky and see an icon like Jack White playing in a parking lot. You for sure won't find anything like that in Houston or Dallas.
But Houston has this.

What city doesn't have that? What you listed isn't unique at all.

Dallaz, doesn't have what? Please be specific. (You can't just say it, prove it!)

Dallas has food trucks
Independent coffee shops
Dallas trumps Austin in shopping options
There's clubs and Bars in and around the downtown/uptown area

Austin food truck scene wipes the floor with Dallas'. By numbers alone- Austin has some 1600+ now- but by quality, too...Austin has the most lax laws governing mobile food, so starting up is super easy to do and creativity and competition is fostered. Dallas is merely trying to play catch-up and copy the food truck culture that exists in Austin. Austin's mobile food scene beats Dallas in the same way that Dallas shopping beats Austin.

Austin also beats Dallas on independent coffee shops...I've had coffee from several places in both and Austin is a clear winner. Austin supports independent businesses far more than Dallas in general, it's easier to find a local coffee shop in central Austin than it is a Starbucks, and the local joints are always packed.

Shopping, I don't give a damn, but it's pretty common knowledge that Dallas trumps Austin in this area.

For the type of bars and nightlife establishments we like, I'll take Austin over Dallas 100%. Downtown Dallas nightlife has always disappointed me.

For being a metro that's a fraction of the size of Dallas, Austin does many things better.

Many people move to Austin specifically to be a part of that downtown culture, the same way that people move to cities 5 times its size. I'm sorry, but Dallas and Houston aren't really those types of places. People go to Austin looking for, among many other things, a downtown like Austin's where thousands upon thousands of people mill around and hop from one joint to the next. Maybe that's not your thing, but it's something that attracts more and more people to Austin.

In more cases than not, people move to Dallas and Houston because they had a better job opportunity. I'm sorry, but it's true. Either that or they did it for their family, meaning they probably didn't move downtown anyways. And people here know that I'm all Dallas and I love it here, and I like the culture in Dallas and think they quality of life is EXCELLENT. But if anyone thinks downtown Dallas or Houston has the energy of Austin or anything even close to that, you're lying to yourselves. Dallas and Houston beat Austin in many areas. Not this one. Give it a freaking rest.

Austin is a college city that supports one of the largest universities in the country. Thats why there DT is so much fun. Houston and Dallas DT's are on a different level than Austin.

But it never fails, everytime I go to Austin I really do have a good time.
