Some think you should cover it under current laws (reckless driving) but none think it should be legal.
I meant texting while driving laws. Gov Perry vetoed this one because he called it government reach, but he opposes gambling because he wants to protect people from the ills and evil of gambling. He's a pretty good example of one of the people I described.

I don't think he is a good example of anyone else, personally...sort of an anomaly. I won't extrapolate from an outlier and say that they are what we should base anything on .

So why should the 95% of the people be denied access to in-state gambling because 5% of people lack self-control?
Because more then 50% think it should be that way .

Then look at a good chunk of the Republicans in the Texas Legislature.

It wrecks lives/homes and the people associated with them. I know people that work in the 'online gambling' industry (i.e. any online game you can incrementally 'buy' and 'spend' currency in), and they are constantly fishing for better ways to hook OCD people that just can't stop themselves.

Sure, you can gamble in LA or NV, or a few other places, but I do not want to make the argument "they are just going to get mugged eventually, why don't we mug them ourselves?". If gambling is remote and not immediately accessible, many people that may be prone to obsessive gambling will never find that out and will go on happily. If you have a casino every 50 miles, they will pretty much catch everyone they can. That is why the industry wants a bigger foothold in TX, so they can get more whales.

Thanks! You make some really good points.

I agree. If they did away with all the social conservatism and took on a more libertarian streak, I'd join them in a heartbeat. As it is I'm partyless.

Republicans should love casinos, they can cut funding for everything else and put more $ in their pockets.

I've seen Vicksburg, Shreveport, and Mobile turn into casino towns during my lifetime. The casinos come in and consume everything around them. The casinos are so flush with cash that everything from zoning to public works projects bend to their will. Everything that happens from that point on happens for the good of the casinos. I don't want to see any Texas city turn into a casino town.

By all means legalize gambling and watch the number of personal bankruptcies and broken families rise!
