My post from another thread on this subject.

//www.city-data.com/forum/texas...re-live-2.html

When I hit rock bottom I would consider moving to Victoria. My wife is from Cuero, TX which is next to Victoria. So she is very familiar with both areas and I've been down enough times from Georgetown,TX (aka Austin Metro) to get a pretty good handle on the city. She HATES that area with a passion. Even makes comments on how ugly the city is. If your fine with high crime, low education attainment and generally nothing to do but drive into Houston for entertainment then Victoria is a great place to live.

The Victoria crime index is 78% higher than the Texas average and and the Texas crime index is 2% higher than the National average.

The Victoria violent crime rate is 93% higher than the Texas average and and the Texas violent crime rate is 0% higher than the National average.

The Victoria property crime rate is 76% higher than the Texas average and and the Texas property crime rate is 2% higher than the National average.

I am presenting my information as a current resident of Victoria, because the OP asked about current conditions. If you have anything to add or correct that might be helpful to the OP, try to do it without the personal diatribes.

The fact that you knew some people who went to school here and became successful in later life does not by itself say anything useful about the quality the school system in the past, and absolutely nothing about the prospects for the future, which is what the OP is looking for. In spite of your glowing endorsement, which is "'strictly opinion", Victoria's schools have not ranked very high in comparative ratings in recent years.
Victorias School District is not ranked well at all. 669 out of 942 districts. No way the margin of error is so large this infomation can be discounted. And doing well in life even while having a disadvantage like where you grew up is generally considered "Beating the Odds". And not the byproduct of a serverly flawed system.

Two-plus hour drive, mostly two-lane, but it's easier to look it up than to type the question and then come back and look for the answer.

It's pretty much in between Houston and San Antonio.
