As DART approaches its 30th anniversary on August 13th, congratulations and thanks are in order for the successful transit system our region has created and also for recent actions the DART’s board took to encourage non-service area cities to join and thereby expand that system. By joining they will become equal partners in one of the best, multi-modal transit systems in the nation. DART can point with pride to stimulating significant private investment and accommodating over 110 million passenger trips per year on its commuter rail, light rail (most extensive in the nation), HOV/Managed lanes, bus system, and demand management programs (car/van pooling). But many of this area’s residents do not live and/or work in areas currently served by transit. Significantly expanding beyond the 13 service area city borders will increase rider access over a wider area, help sustain regional growth, enhance the economy, and improve the quality of life through reduced congestion, pollution and urban sprawl. This is a great time for a large number of additional cities to unite, join DART and expand region-wide transit in concert.
