So I know Houston has been catching up lately but how many years before Houston catches up to Dallas?

I'm assuming by LRT you mean light rail transit?

Depends on how you are measuring:

DFW DART: 85 miles, Houston 7.5.

Houston: (supposedly) 2nd highest ridership by mileage in the US, DART much much lower, probably close to the lowest.

Houston rail has 36k per day weekday riders; DART has double that daily.

The wikipedia on Houston's rail is pretty interesting; apparently it was contstantly blocked and defunded by common criminal Tom Delay. He consistently wrecked the US, but apparently pounded Houston relentlessly as well.

Wrong...The last ridership numbers Dallas was in the Top 3 Gainers in ridership at over 100,000 boardings daily(119,000 to be exact)which is more than double the ridership of Houstons system.....I couldnt find the article that list this(still looking) but heres one that gives an idea of the ridership jump DART experienced.
Rail News - APTA, MTA report ridership gains in 2012 despite destructive storms. For Railroad Career Professionals

That's still pretty low daily ridership by mileage (sort of a dubious metric), but I didn't mean to denigrate the system in any case. I love DART. Texas needs more light rail.

If the 119,000 number is correct, then it would have the forth highest rider ship in the country for light rail per Wikipedia.

I see the distinction between light and heavy commuter rail systems in the US as too 'insider baseball' for riders of the system, so you have to compare this list as well, not just the LRT systems:
