maybe Northwest Arkansas might work
Beautiful area, we used to go up to Lake Bull Shoals each summer and then participate in a canoe race down the White River to Batesville. Really, really nice scenery, but some of it can be really remote. Which, of course, can be a good and a bad thing .

The days can get hot and the humidity is much worse than most of non-coastal Texas, but the summers are shorter...

The term "Northwest Arkansas" is used to refer to a metro not the Northwestern quadrant of Arkansas. As far as I know Batesville is not in NWA.Sorry for the confusion.

I know many people here who get around on bicycle. Personally, I wouldn't want to risk it with some of the drivers here, but people do it. Walking is more limited, but there are some neighborhoods where you can get to quite a bit on foot. Some stretches of Central Ave. aren't pedestrian friendly (or friendly at all?) but you can get to a lot just by walking up and down Central. I've walked long distances on it on foot and even some of the more risky stretches are generally fine during the day.

Thanks KathrynAragon. I remember Arkansas as being very beautiful. I'd have to revisit it to see if I would fit in there or not. Fort Worth is one I've been thinking about, also, so that's a great suggestion.

I'd take a road trip to the following (1st hand experience is best):

1. Austin
2. Fort Worth
3. Albuquerque
4. Little Rock
5. KC

Go in person--nothing can replace the feel you get from experiencing a place first hand. Interact w/ as many people as you can.
