What are some good larger to medium sized cities in Texas to live in without a car?

There are none. Sorry. You can live in most of Europe without a car, you can live in NYC or Boston without a car but you cannot live in Texas without a car.

I agree. You really need a car in Texas. Sure, you could get by in Uptown Dallas without one, but to get outside of that neighborhood, you are out of luck

Austin -

Austin has got to be the most mobile city ive ever been to in Texas. By mobile i mean other than a car.
I swear, i think 90% of Austin rides bicycles, lol. Theyre everywhere!! Now if you're thining subway, tram etc. your a bit out of luck. Although Austin does have a rail car, it doesnt serve more than downtown.

However, like most Texas cities, public transportation is availble and although i dont like to take the bus, its pretty good.

If you live and work downtown (and can afford to live downtown), then you can live in Texas without a car. I live in Austin and only rely on public transportation, walking, or biking (Austin's bike-sharing program is great). Public transportation in any city in Texas is a fly hitting a windshield compared to Europe or some Northeastern cities though.

For the first 6 months in DFW, I got by just fine without a car. I stayed in Irving, and worked in DT Dallas, took the orange line (DART) every morning and afternoon. My wife and I both have cars now, but I usually leave mine home and still prefer the train.

You can live without a car in Inner Loop Houston, the urban core of Dallas, as well as the downtowns of Austin, San Antonio, and Ft.Worth.

Why would anyone want to live in Texas WITHOUT a car? How would you ever go anywhere more than a few blocks away?

I liked it. I walked a lot and used public transportation during bad weather if I needed to. I especially liked it when I was at the beaches.
