Hello all,

I am planning a trip to Texas during Labor Day weekend and debating to visit either Austin, Dallas or Houston. I work in the software/aerospace industry so it would be cool to see which tech city is up and coming. I have heard Austin is currently booming with a lot of startup scenes and is considered the Silicon Valley of the Southwest. However, I've been told Dallas/Houston are slowly rising up to the tech scene as well.

Besides that I'm looking for fun things to do during the holiday break. Any inputs would be greatly appreciated.

Dallas > Austin > Houston.

Houston for aerospace though. At least I'm hearing Clear Lake an area of Houston is doing great in that field.

Since the shuttle program ended, a lot of aerospace work has ended in Houston / Clear Lake. Many companies/jobs are simply no longer there. The Dallas - Ft. Worth area, Waco, and Austin have most of the current and future aerospace (and defense) work lined up.

Really though, a person working in any industry should be up to speed with their own industry and be an expert in their own area. Asking the general community for answers is a sign that someone isn't doing their homework.

I left the aerospace/software industry in Clear Lake in 2011 when layoffs were ramping up, and I still keep up with people who managed to stay afloat there. There is still some hiring, but that is a very unstable place to be right now.

That being said, Houston and Dallas will have diverse economies with multiple other industries. If you are into startups, then Austin is the place to be. But if you want a software role at a fortune 500 company, then it's Houston or Dallas.

For "things to do" my choice would be Austin, assuming one has personal transportation.

Dallas is white collar city. And Houston is more a blue collar city with some white collar jobs here and there.

If you want a job in a factory or warehouse moved to Houston. If you want a job in business or office moved to Dallas.

If you moved to Dallas thinking you get job in say a factory or warehouse you will be homeless and on the street.

Dallas is very white collar city with most jobs white collar jobs.

Austin is more trendy city and lot of hipsters. It feels more like a west coast city than city in Texas.
