I moved to Texas 20 years ago from Utah. I was born and raised in Utah. As a non-Mormon life was hard. I was the only kid in my elementary school in 1980 that was not a mormon. I had kids tell me their parents would not let them play with me because I was not Mormon. I am Lutheran and was told I was a devil worshipper because the devil's name is Luther, this was hilarious to me as a nine year old since the devil's name is Lucifer. I had teachers in public schools openly tell students that a woman's place is in the home and college and working should not be goals for women.

I have found native Texans to be the most friendly, welcoming people I have ever met. Moving here was one of the best choices I have ever made. I have not experienced anything in Texas like I did growing up in Utah. No one has asked me what my religious preferences are. I have many friends who are very religious. Most Texans have a live and let live attitude which I love. Texas is a great place to live. Texas is Texas.

The people that seem to have the most trouble living here are transplants who don't do enough research prior to moving or who fail to acclimate and expect things to be like the state they moved from. Texas is not California, Ohio, Illinois or Michigan -- nor does it want to be.

This is not something conclusive, but more people voted for Hillary Clinton in Texas than in New England. The majority of Texans are politicallyl and socially conservative, but there are an awful lot who aren't.

San Antonio voted Democratic as did the other big Texas cities, except Corpus Christi, Fort Worth, and Galveston-- the cities versus rural communities, same battles in Texas as in the rest of the country. The heavily Hispanic Rio Grande Valley went Democratic as well.

Trump won the state by 9% which is large by political standards. With all the negative pub against him, even in Texas, it is amazing the margin was that large. I imagine the state will continue red for a while.

But the OP didn't seem guided by politics but rather strictly Bible Belt types and acceptance of Californians . They did ask about people being nice but also described their narrow minded selves as nice so I'm not sure their criteria for being nice. Obviously Bible Belters aren't nice in their eyes.
