I went there like 3-4 years ago on Christmas day. It was the only place my girlfriend (at the time) and I could find that was open.

Pretty much anyone under 50 is repelled by the thought of eating in a cafeteria, so all the chains were on life support a long time ago anyway. Personally I don't understand the visceral dislike of cafeterias, but I have largely given up trying to understand the tastes of the general public anyway. I like cafeterias.

People today are far more picky about the quality (versus the quantity) of their food when eating out, and they will spend more money to get good quality.

Luby's and other cafeteria/buffet-style restaurants were all about serving hearty but mediocre meals at a cheap price.

I thought they announced that they were closing a year ago?

I was surprised that they were still in business right before the lockdown. They were supposed to close in February after the New Year announcement. Surprisingly the Cinco Ranch location never stayed open for takeout during the lockdown and waited until July to reopen their dining room.

This makes sense. Most people under the age of 50 did not have the privilege of eating home-cooked meals on a regular basis so they don't appreciate a cafeteria like Luby's that serves "home-style" cooking.

I would agree that cafeterias in general attract an older demographic.

Actually it's the quality of the food. Soggy roasted chicken is not appealing and neither is rock hard, salty fried chicken! Cafeterias are the epitome of inedible food.

There are restaurants that produce homestyle cuisine. Cheddars and Cracker Barrel come to mind. Cracker Barrel's Sunday Homestyle Chicken is now available every day.

I see a large number of fat children, teenagers and adults. In my 1950s - 1960s childhood, hardly anybody was fat. You can blame this sad situation on working mothers who don't have the time or inclination to prepare well balanced meals for their families. So they take their kids to MacDonald's, Wendy's, Burger King or some such fast food place to gorge on double cheeseburgers, fries and a "shake."

Those of us whose mothers prepared well balanced meals every day are and were appreciative of restaurants like Luby's.

Junk food has given rise to a junk culture.

You can predictably see a line of cars backing into the street during lunch and dinner at any Chick-Fil-A every weekday. The worst times are during school holidays and the seasonal breaks.

The weekends are less busier because lunch and dinner times are more flexible.

Kids were more active back then. Both food and drink portions were smaller.
