I live near Murchison and all I ever hear is MURCH is son, for the record. From people who live there and/or have grown up in this area.

I downloaded this back in 2010. It's still there, on the Texas Almanac site. I've found it to be quite complete and accurate.

Don’t get me started on Palestine.

A lot of these name games are kind of ridiculous anyway.

Colmesneil ( Cole' - mah- neel)

Most of y'all never heard of it but that's OK. 15 miles north of Woodville on US 69.

If y'all decide to put an entry in here please put put in here how to phonically pronounce it, for my sake, please.

I have an awesome friend from Mexia and he says pronounce it "Mah'-hair". Is that close? (He lives in Hewitt now).

My grandmother was a Murchison from the Llano area. My aunt actually wrote a book on the early settlers there. I have heard Murchison mispronounced before and I think some people may actually pronounce their name that way - but probably not in Texas. Incidentally, Llano is pronounced with a hard L but I’ve always heard Llano Estacado pronounced the correct Spanish way. I love the interesting pronunciations we have in Texas, gives us flavor. I think the Mexican and German influence created some interesting names.

I used to handle Massachusetts for an insurance company and I had to work hard at some of the town names. I’ve learned to do that with any name. I figure the people who live there, or the person whose name it is, are the ones that get to decide how to pronounce it even if it doesn’t match the original pronunciation. Such as Blanco. In San Antonio Blanco Rd actually does go to Blanco TX, from back before the highways, and I have always “Americanized” it like the town as did everyone here. Now I sometimes hear it pronounced the Spanish way which, although correct, kind of just sounds pretentious. The one name that is so off that I cringe when I say it is Manchaca. I was completely confused the whole time I lived in the Austin area and there would be a wreck on “Manshack” Rd.

A seemingly easy town is Elgin but most people say it wrong. Not a town, but I enjoy the (mis)pronunciation of the Pedernales River. Oddly enough, people like to add another s in the middle of New Braunfels saying New Brawnsfels. I’ve also noticed in San Antonio I can always tell locals because it turns into one word and the San is emphasized whereas with non-locals it is two distinct words with the Antonio emphasized. San Angelo is even worse, I’m pretty sure it sounds like Sunangelo when I say it - I grew up in both places so I claim both as a local.

When I lived in Waco the local news and local folks would always pronounce it Muh-HAY-uh. or sometimes Maw-HAY-uh.

Non-locals would always say something like MEX-ia
