I went to El Paso briefly but it also seems like its up and running as far as hotel occupancy is concerned so ill most likely move to Houston and try to gain employment there, well first try and get a place to land, then apply for work.
While your options are still open I would try to find work anywhere you can first… …as in not limiting to just Texas, as you may find a better option elsewhere that pays strong, then look for housing around that area. It will also be easier to obtain housing with work lined up.

Have to agree with this. Unless you are getting some help in TX, then any state should be open to you. One idea of cheaper rent near hotels you could work at would be airport hotels that are not "near" (meaning outskirts) a city. Denver Intl Airport, and Houston (IAH) are possibilities. Albuquerque also - airport is near the city, but rent is cheaper. Hope you get settled in somewhere and good luck!

Dang! Is that how much they are now? We were paying that for a 1 bedroom in Dana Point, Ca. before we moved out of state a year and a half ago. Out of curiosity I looked to see what our old apartment was going for these days and the same 1 bedroom floorplan was starting at $2,600! This is nutzo!
Before settling on (for now) Vancouver, Wa. Reno was one of the areas we looked at. 1600 for a pretty nice place just a short while ago!
