Rita was not a "direct" hit for Galveston or the immediate area. The eye passed close to the Louisiana/Texas border. There was damage from Rita, but not to the extent of Ike nor to any hurricane that has passed directly over Galveston.

Rita also helped prepare some Houston and Galveston residents for Ike because they became aware of how long it might take to evacuate. Better plans were put into place including contraflow on some parts of the interstate.

So true. There is no place like Galveston. I can't believe it isn't appreciated more by Texans. Can you get those historical Victorian mansions, museums, attractions AND the beach at places like Port A, Corpus, S Padre? Nope! Galveston is a jewel to Texas.

It will come back. It never really was gone, just damaged some. Bolivar/Crystal Beach on the other hand... I don't know. But that was just a sleepy little beach town, nothing at all like Galveston.

Default Aid For Galveston

There are several ways to make sure any monies you donate to the rebuilding of Galveston go directly to the community. Call the Houston Area Red Cross and be sure to tell them that is what you want your donation to go toward. I found a site called Galveston Rising that looks very interesting. I don't know much about them but you can probably verify they are legitimate before donating.

Galveston Rising - Raising Hurricane Ike relief funds for Galveston Island, Texas (http://www.galvestonrising.com/about.html - broken link)

I encourage you to pass along this video link. The goal of the video is to inspire individuals to contribute to the Red Cross.

They can always do something new on Bolivar Peninsula. Sure they can.
