What small towns has everyone grown up in? I grew up in Brazoria, and it's come a long way. When I was a kid there was obvious rascism, but nowadays anything could pretty much happen there and not bother anyone. My best friend lives there and is a Wiccan with tattoos and she has several gay friends, and she's married to a country boy. Her oldest daughter is nearly 20, pregnant and is engaged to a hispanic cop. Her youngest daughter tends to be more a preppy type. They have tons of friends and don't seem to have too many or any issues living there either (They both grew up there as well).

I live in Hutto (outside of Austin). We have a black mayor, quite a few biracial families, hispanic, and white community and pretty much everyone gets along.

When I lived in Clear Lake, I never noticed intolerance and unacceptance, unless maybe you mean between the have and have nots.

I don't hate any Texas town but having lived in several major American cities from Texas to the mid-Atlantic, Texas cities certainly do not hold the patents on tolerance. Tolerance in urban Texas is simply based on a different set of values than most rural Texans. In fact, liberal city dwellers can be extremely intolerant on issues like differing political views, older Americans, types of vehicles one chooses to drive and even regional accents. I am a conservative older American who drives a pickup truck and has a deep east Texas accent. I've been on both ends and both sides of this planet and I find it discouraging to have someone from Dallas or Austin tell me I am ignorant simply because I pronounce the word "oil" "all." Tolerance is not the big difference between urban and rural America. It's values.
