Wow, blasts from the past! I shopped at a Piggly Wiggly when I lived in Harker Heights back many years ago. I remember those Skaggs stores, too.

Wow Muhnay, I never even thought of that as an option. I just made a list of the most well known stores. After I posted the poll I realized I had forgotten a few, Minyard, Brookshires to start; oh well people can use the "other" option. I was tempted to put "convenience store" on their, but do people REALLY go to one of those to buy groceries?

When I lived in Boise ID, there was a small 24 hour corner store it was just a short walk away and we would shop there for Milk or Eggs, or bread.. to hold us over till we got to Albertsons ( where the store got its start. ).

The great thing about the Commissary is they price match and no tax ever.

regarding the poll choices--can you grow toilet paper...
HEB is just about as predatory as WalMart -- I have SIL living in Victoria and they have had no luck getting/keeping any main stream grocery stores in town but those two...

Yes, that's very true. When I lived in Brownsville, there were SIX HEBs. Nothing else until Super Walmart was built. Albertson's tried to break into the market briefly but was a flash in the pan. I really disliked not having a real choice of where to shop.

I hear Save-A-Lot has moved in and wonder how they're doing. From what a friend told me, they moved close to downtown and that's a big disadvantage.

Since moving to TX last March I've become spoiled by HEB. IMO their customer service is awesome - love the selection and variety of foods. Lived in KY for the last 38 years and never shopped at a place that had customer service like HEB. Shopped mostly at Kroger or Super Walmart there (they were both close)...now when I have to pop in at a Wallyworld or even a Super Target for a loaf of bread or whatever, I realize even more how much I love HEB!!! All 3 are very close to my house and HEB is the "farthest" but it still gets my vote!!

Kroger, Kroger, Kroger, Kroger, Kroger...

I've never been to an HEB store though. Aren't they expensive?

i would compare it to Kroger prices. just average. i wouldnt call HEB expensive. HEB store brands are real good, at least some of them. my favorite is their thin crust pizza

From what I can tell by shopping at both stores, their prices are almost identical. Kroger does have the 10 for 10 sales which I loved.
Albertsons and Tom Thumb/ Randalls are the most over-priced stores in the state. No wonder so many of them have gone out of business.
