Yes, the Tom Laundry Center is located right next to "Big" Baylor. It is a pretty neat place. If your looking for something like that also check out the Cooper Aerobics Center.

If you are wanting the condo type of life and w/in walking distance to shops you might look into the new condos being built at the Firewheel Town Center in Garland. I believe the name of it is going to be Parkside at Firewheel and should be open by this summer.

Guess it's too early to find out much info. on Parkside. Nothing on the net that I could find.
Can you join Cooper for the swimming and weight area, and do you have any idea of the cost per year? So beautiful that I feel it is too pricey (I'm not cheap but hate getting ripped...such a spoil sport I am)?
Again, Cooper looks like it is more University Park but maybe I am wrong?

I'd say Houston has an edge, but I don't think you could go wrong with either. Houston has the largest medical district in the nation and many top-ranked centers like M. D. Anderson, Texas Heart Institute, Texas Children's, etc. Also several medical schools, including in Galveston.

When I was living in Austin, I noticed they were really lacking in this area. Houston and Dallas don't have that problem.

Thanks, JJP, for that info. I lived in Houston 21 years and had never seen a medical center like it; however, I am not in the medical field and did not know if was the largest in the nation...gosh, I am impressed even more! They reallllly do have wonderful medical care there, so, for all the things I hated about there, that really makes up for alot.
I get the impression Dallas doesn't have the big medical complex--although not lacking in good medical care.
Well, thank goodness I have never needed medical care but...just in case, it is comforting to know that it is nearby. Just covering my rear.

Hello,

I think the San Antonio Medical Center is one of the best. We have several specialty Cancer Centers, Children's hospitals, and several University hospitals. The University Hospital Emergency Room is one of the top-ranked in the nation. It is easy to get to from IH-10 and the traffic is next to nothing compared to the Big "D" and Houstown. Sorry, lived down the road from the Medical Center all of my life and I am a little predgidous. San Antonio is #1 on my list. Just thought that you should know that there are more than 2 world class facilities in Texas!

Houston like JJP said......#1. Now there are better ranked hospitals in the U.S.....I don't think Texas has a top 5 except MD Anderson (#3) cancer center and TIRR (rehab) is ranked #2.

Parkland is a county hospital just like Ben Taub in Houston ...... both get the trauma and dredge of their perspective counties. Both are excellent training for war-zone trauma surgeons! Neither are world class hospitals. The Medical Center in Houston is world class with cutting edge technology (first heart transplants, cutting edge interventional angiography and neuro-vascular intervention.). Not taking anything away from the Metro-mess area but it ain't Houston.

Thank God for MD Anderson. We are so blessed in Texas to have such a fine cancer center. I hope I never have to use it, but know many who have.

While having places like MD Anderson is nice, especially from a R&D perspective,to intimate that you have to go to big places like that to get first rate care is not true.My wife is a nurse in a doctors clinic,so all her relatives, and mine, get treated with extra special care. Not that doctors give less care to normal patients, but they do go the extra mile with family and friends. When her father was diagnosed with cancer and decided on radiation and chemo instead of surgery,he and his wife, along with his doctor, were discussing where to go to get treated. Many doctors here don't like sending patients to MD because,as they say,you become a number in a huge patient mill, and don't get very personalized care, which is important to someone suffering from a potentially terminal illness. The doctors told my in laws that the doctor that developed the protocol for his treatment is here,so why go to Houston to get the same care you will get here?Since my wife works for,and we are friends with, one of the doctors that recommended staying here for treatment,I am quite sure he received the exact same care here as he would have in Houston,in a much more personal manner. He stayed here, and within a year was diagnosed as being in 100% remission, and has been ever since. And the cancer was involved enough that the surgeon that did the biopsy strongly objected to him foregoing surgery and being treated only with chemo and radiation.

The heart surgeons here have as good a success record as the big cities heart units do as well. Some things, like severe neuro trauma, need a big city specialist simply because the smaller cities don't see as many cases, but most things are done the same, with the same success, in the smaller cities as the big ones.

I liked your post and agree that if you know someone in a smaller community we will do our best to give VIP treatment. I always worked in center city Philadelphia in a top 30 nationally recognized hospital and thought we gave the most premier care...yes you were a number, but one of many; that meant we had more experience and that is more than just a "little" important if you know what I mean. I then went to work in a smaller town commumity hospital and I know we give OUTSTANING care to our community. I do still believe that the care is not necessarily always the same as you mentioned in your post. I believe often people get too comfortable with the personal treatment and the comfort of it they sometimes can't make the big decision to go to a teaching facility when it would be a better choice than the smaller hospital. I personally like the VIP treatment and the warm bedside manner...but as a health care professional I care much more about my outcome than the journey. So far the community hospital has been a great experience...it's just knowing the rare time you must go to the premier facility.

Nurse - patient ratios in this country are down right FRIGHTENING!!!!!! I see it every day when I go into my hospital. I also read the literature on a regular basis...it's a national problem. Bush just proposed $100,000,000 medicare cut...that means you can kiss many community hospitals bye, bye. Healthcare reform, not cuts, must happen so we can continue to enjoy the convenience of the community hospital or we will all be traveling into the city hospitals.

That "medical center" in San Antonio is like the one a few miles from my old house in Houston. I have seen it. It is small, but you can get your medical needs there.

Houston has the nations largest medical center. They are building so many new things there, and there are a lot of cranes. People from around the world go there to get treated on.

Dallas comes in second, but you can find decent care there. After that, San Antonio.
