So to help us we were just wondering...

What are your most and least favorite things about living in Texas? The things you love, the things you hate?? It can be anything at all, significant or inconsequential.

Thanks for your help!!
Both areas are nice but it's amazing how different they are from each other especially when less than 100 miles (short distance by Texas standards) separates them. Austin is more liberal, it's not only the capitol city but it's also basically a college town in which most graduates want to stay. I've never personally met a UT grad that did not want to get an Austin job and live there after graduation. Austin has become VERY 'big city'. San Antonio is an entirely different "feel". Climate is similar for both, I'm guessing that "job" should play a big part in your decision. The economy is still pretty good in Texas, almost 80% of all new jobs last year were created in Texas, and we don't pay a State income tax which is a help. Our economy will slow down during this recession but we will still be in better shape than most. There are only 7 states that don't have a budget deficit - Texas is one of the 7.

Good Luck - welcome to Texas if it becomes your choice.

Favorite things: the people here, wild flowers, the variety in climate and scenery, family values, education, football, mexican food, steaks, & BBQ.... and much more

Least favorite: very hot summers, takes forever to get out of the state when driving on vacation, really not true 4 seasons here, mosquitos (that's pretty much it)

On a side note.... I used to live in San Antonio and absolutely loved it! It's my favorite city in Texas. Good luck with your decision and welcome to Texas!

Default Here Are These Things

Most favorite: Food, cities, towns, charm, women, colorful flags, efficient highway system, terrain (which is varied, of course), traditions.

Least favorite: Too many people throwing trash and messing up our land. We should, at least, get a conscience.

This is one of the things I find quite strange (a dislike, I suppose) about Texans. This weird hate they have for Houston... especially if it's coming from someone in Dallas (which I think is a very similar city to Houston in most ways.) But even when it's coming from Texans in other cities, I just don't get this attitude (which after questioning them, I usually find is brought about by inexperience with or ignorance of the city.)

I don't hate Houston - I visit there quite a lot and have for over 40 years . I grew up in Corpus, lived in Austin and now live near Fort Worth. I don't care for the Houston weather - it's no more humid than Corpus but it doesn't have the Gulf breeze that Corpus has - also doesn't have the easy access to beaches that Corpus has. Has nothing to do with "city" although I don't guess I would care for Dallas so much either. A city of 400,000 is plenty big enough for me.

I worked in Dallas for 25 years - not fond of that traffic. I go Dallas to shop occasionally and love some of the neighborhoods just as I do some of the Houston neighborhoods - just would prefer not to live there.

Well said, and I couldn't agree more. I grew up in far North Texas, have lived in West Texas (Marfa) and now reside outside of Houston. They are completely different. I would love to live in North or West Texas again. When we finally leave Houston, I don't plan on ever coming back. Too hot and waaaaayyy too humid. Also, the bugs, traffic, and lack of scenery.

To the OP: my sister lives in San Antonio and she loves it! It is hot and humid in the summers and the traffic can be a mess sometimes, but we always have so much fun when we visit. Really great places to eat!

My husband went to UT, so we go to Austin sometimes to visit. I love the Hill country. Austin is just full of fun (and sometimes weird) people.

Good luck in your search and in your move! Most of Texas is really great!

Understandable... but if you can find great places to eat in San Antonio and fun/weird people in Austin, you can usually find 2x or more of that in Houston.

Just seems like other Texas continually bring up the weather in Houston, yet don't give credit where it's due in other aspects.

San Antonio has a great location. You are on the edge of the beautiful Hill Country, close enough for easy day trips. Less than 3 hours to Corpus Christi or Houston/Galverston area and some great beaches. About an hour to Austin and a lot of great shopping along the way. San Antonio is a very historic city with a lot of character and a world class zoo. Lots of trees and beautiful gardens. Nice place.

All true - great food in Houston and as I said before, there are some wonderful neighborhoods. Much of Texas has boring architecture (in my opinion), Houston has neighborhoods inside the loop with a lot of character. Galveston and the cities along the bay highway are like little seaside resort areas. Hop and ship to the beautiful scenery just west of Houston and an easy drive into Louisiana.

I know I said "you couldn't pay me to live in Houston" which is what sorta started this whole thing but I also said that people "love it" which means that they know more about it than I do because they live there.

I think that's true of most parts of Texas - if folks did not love their area, they would move. Good/Bad wherever you live and a lot of it has to do with attitude.

One thing is consistent all over Texas - the good people and the good food. When I'm gone, I can't wait to get back to my Mexican food, chicken fried steak and BBQ - even though I don't eat out all that often. It's more when I'm traveling and have to eat out - I look for those things to eat and they aren't there.

Well, sure, Houston has a lot to offer as a major metropolitan area--it just depends on what one considers important!

The climate in Houston would be a dealbreaker for me, regardless of whatever else is there!

For others, the conveniences and all that Houston has to offer (and it has quite a bit) would outweigh the hot, muggy climate. It's a terrific place to visit in the winter, when it's not quite so stifling!

And yes, I'm a native Texan, too, but not that area.
