Half of Texas? There are zillions of creeks, wells, aquifers, springs, creeks etc that water Houston honey. The Trinity is but one source flowing into the area.

Anyway, Houston itself is a water catchment area. Rain waters the city. Two Rivers run through the Metro. The Trinity and Brazos. In between there are 28 streams, creeks, bayous, whatever you want to call them.
Lots of ground water and natural and man made lakes.

Don't know why people are debating about the rivers. Neither Houston or Dallas have very appeasing river fronts. If i were going to rank the river fronts in Texas it would be

1: Austin (Colorado River)
2: San Antonio (San Antonio River)
3:Houston (Buffalo Bayou)
4:Ft. Worth (Trinity River)
5: Dallas (Trinity River)
6: El Paso (Rio Grande)

Don't forget Waco! The Brazos is big and wide through the city like Austin. The others are not.

Also, question for Dallasites. I know it isn't like this now, but when I was a kid living in Dallas, the Trinity smelled like sewage. You'd smell it as you drove over the bridges. This was like 25 years ago, any idea why it used to smell back then?

Thats a misconception..The trinity never smells. however there is a big water treatment plant just west of I-45 going north into Dallas. It reeks up to high heavens at times but it is not the trinity river.

Please stop. The Trinity River in Dallas is NOT 20-30ft unless there are is a major rain event. 30 ft is flood stage.

It still smells like that as you pass over the east fork in Forney on Highway 80. People actually fish out of that nasty sewage water...I see it all the time!!!

Ah, it probably was the treatment plant or whatever then. But people used to tell me it was the Trinity. They did mention fishing in that water, which I thought like you was pretty strange to do.

The Colorado river is dammed as it goes through the city.
