I am planning to visit some friends in High Island and Beaumont, Texas. I will be traveling on I-10 from Ft. Stockton to Houston. Then from Houston to Galveston for a few days visit with family. What I am wondering is, what is the road condition from Galveston via the ferry to High Island and then to Winnie and on into Beaumont since the storm Ike? Is hwy 87 along the coast in traveling condition?

You won't have any problems driving on Highway 87 through Bolivar Peninsula and that was the hardest hit. It's really sad how many beach homes were destroyed by Hurricane Ike.

Yep, the landscape there is considerably changed but the roads are ok.

You can forget the portion of State Highway 87 to Port Arthur from High Island. It was closed years ago due to extensive hurricane damage and the state designation truncated. 87 now just comes off of I-10 at Winnie and you can be able to go to the Bolivar Ferry into Galveston without much problem. I'm not sure if you're going to Beaumont before or after Galveston, so my guess must be afterward. Just use I-10 into Beaumont and back to Winnie.

TX-87 does not hit I-10 at Winnie. It hits TX-124 at High Island, which takes you north to Winnie. Then the highway changes names before it touches I-10. TX-124 veers east with TX-73 and then parallels I-10 all the way to Beaumont. But going this way should be no problem.

It's the shortest most direct way, 80 miles with a ferry ride:

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=galveston+tx&daddr=29.63 5546,-94.372559+to:beaumont+tx&hl=en&geocode=FWQavwEdgIB Z-ilZkgXEyFk_hjHB7Oq5yQOL5Q%3B%3BFZ4TywEdqh5k-imdsY89GMs-hjEdzVrcPpyu_Q&mra=dpe&mrcr=0&mrsp=1&sz=10&via=1&s ll=29.69072,-94.65234&sspn=0.863725,1.229095&ie=UTF8&ll=29.7977 51,-94.638977&spn=1.725569,2.458191&z=9

You won't have any trouble with the roads going that way.

BTW the stretch of 87 is closed from High Island to Sea Rim State Park (nude beach area), but then 87 picks up again at Sabine Pass, through Port Arthur, Orange and the rest of Deep East TX. It's now basically two separate highways with the same number.

I thank everyone for the information on the roadway from Galveston to Winnie. I am sorry that I failed to mention that I have lived in the Port Arthur/Beaumont/Winnie area most of my life. I moved away a year before Ike and this will be my first trip back.

You will be somewhat shocked, Rita and Ike had a large effect on those areas.

You're right, tstone. I stand corrected. It's just too bad for the old 87 that that can't be used anymore east of High Island to Sabine Pass. I could have sworn I saw that sign on 10 mentioning Galveston but thinking they also included 87. My fault. Thanks for the clarification. Good post.

It can...sorta'.

What is left of that part of 87 just calls for a really good 4x4 and tolerance for a 10 MPH journey...

A little dated and a major storm or two off as well, but it should still apply.
