It must really be a small town. I'm trying to get info on the neighborhoods, so I would know where to start looking for a place to live, and to help me decide whether or not to even live there. Does anyone know any other website/forum where I could find specific neighborhood info?? The San Marcos chamber of Commerce, etc. just give basic stats on the city itself. I need a more personal take on the neighborhoods, specifically older, more eclectic 'hoods.

Anyway, thanks.

SM isn't small. It is 35,000 pop with a good sized university located there. It almost runs into Austin on the north and New Braunfels on the south, and due to it's closeness to Austin and being on the interstate it probably has more big city conveniences than most other towns it's size.Try contacting the university there.I think they call it Texas State U - San Marcos now.

I just noticed your location. If you live in Austin why not just drive 45 min. down the road and check it out in person?

Default Never mind

Well, I have driven down the road many times to San Marcos. It's the NEIGHBORHOODS that I'm trying to get info on, not the city itself. One can drive thru any neighborhood and think it's nice, but it could be not so nice and you'd never know it. And 35,000 pop is SMALL compared to Austin and Dallas, where I'm from......

I think I'll just move along to some other site to get some help.

That's what real estate agents are for.

I don't live there myself. I am between Houston and Galveston, but my wife and I have a lot of friends there. (We trek over 5-6 times per year for the fencing tournaments).

I find it very urban/suburban and still easy-going. When my wife and I take time to get away for a weekend and hit the Hill Country and such, we usually make it a point to veer south to skip Austin and hit San Marcos and New Braunfels and bank due west to skip San Antonio. (Hey, I work in the 4th largest city in America, why would I want to relax in another big city?)

I imagine it is getting pricey, real estate-wise. Austin and San Antonio are overflowing and there is quite an influx from the West Coast these days. The area is definitely growing and will continue to.
