I'm curious how many Tacoma owners have had the frame rust-thru issues.
Have you gotten a recall notice to go in for the undercoating spray or needed a buy back? How pervasive are serious rust-thru problems, how common is a buy back the solution? Is the spray treatment effective?
I read a lot on this issue last year while researching Tacoma's. You will find out a lot on Toyota forums. I can't remember the years effected. I think if you live in a Northern state you had a much better chance of having issues (winter - road salt).
I belong to several Toyota truck forums and there have been people who have had their trucks bought back. I believe it involves Tacomas up to 2000 and mostly nothern states. Here is some info, good read if you have time. All 95-00 Tacoma Drivers Read This! - YotaTech Forums
I think most people were happy. One of my friends has a 1996 Tacoma regular cab 4wd (automatic too) that she bought new. She still has it. Not any rust on her frame, but this is Tennessee. Guess they rusted worse up north.
Our local dealer did have some brought in from up north... some were nasty looking. Still amazes me at the super high resell value that these trucks have. Even the late 80s-early 90s have super high resell values - they really didnt have the frame rust issue though. Still the engines were notorious for blowing head gaskets (on both the 2.4L I4 and the 3.0L V6), yet still people shell out big $$$$ for them. I love em' and have been looking for one, especially a 4wd extended cab automatic, but I will not pay the prices they are commanding.
