What year Echo? I am assuming you are looking for a dipstick to check the ATF in an automatic. I have not been hands-on with an Echo but in general cars of this ilk have the engine on one side of the underhood area and transmisson on the other. In general it seems more common to have the tranny on the driver's side of the car (North America and other places where the driver sits on the left side of the car). Look around and you'll find a tube coming up from the trans with a dipstick attached.
Follow the owner's manual instructions to check the fluid. Use a clean, lint-free rag like a paper towel to wipe the dipstick. Autoboxes in general are sensitive to dirt, more so than engines.
Don't be quick to add fluid if you don't see leaks. At least some 'yota transolas are very sensitive to over-filling.
Go grab yourself a shop manual, at least a Chilton or Haynes. Even if you are not much on DIY, at least this (relatively cheap) level of shop manual is well worth having.
