How many of you out there like to travel to "exotic destinations" like I do?

To me an "exotic destination" is a place other than the US, Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, Western Europe, Egypt, Turkey and Israel. It doesn't have to be Mongolia (never been there ... yet) but it could be nearer places like Venezuela or Iceland, or distant places like Uzbekistan or Sri Lanka.

Tell us about an exotic place you've been.

I'll go first: A few years ago I took a vacation that included a few days in Hong Kong (no big deal, I had been there twice before), but I then flew to Kathmandu, Nepal and stayed in Nepal for a couple of weeks. From Kathmandu I took an overland journey by motorcoach with 6 others through the Himalayas, past near Mount Everest into Tibet, staying in Tibetan towns such as Changdu and Gyantse until finally reaching the capital Lhasa. It was a great trip.

Iceland, Anartica, and parts of Eastern Europe are definitely on my bucket list. I'd also love to visit Morocco. I'm not sure how exotic you consider it, but I'm going to Croatia to check out their up and coming wine industry next year. Definitely not your typical "tourism" destination in that country.

That sounds awesome! You should post some pictures, I'm sure the forum would love to see 'em even if you blank out the face for anonymity.

What did you like about it? Anything you didn't like? I'm quite jealous as I can't do places like that since I'm somewhat altitude sensitive, anything about 8,000 feet I don't feel good at all.

Okay, here is 1 picture.

This is me in front of the Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet. It's an absolutely amazing building.

Late summer.

Here is another "exotic" adventure I had ... but many years ago (a quarter century ago in fact): I was just out of college in my early twenties and my Mom and I had been to Europe about 5 times (the travel compulsion gene runs in my family!) and we decided to go somewhere different - South America! We didn't like the 2 nights in Rio, 2 nights in Caracas type tour so we decide to spent about 3 weeks in just one country: Peru. We flew from Miami to the city of Iquitos on the Amazon River; only stayed in Iquitos a couple of days then we cruised down the Amazon in the direction of Brazil took a turn at a tributary river and spent nearly a week in a "Nature" camp with no electricity or plumbing. We met local Indian tribespeople who spoke no Spanish and we traded stuff. We flew to Lima for a few days, saw the museums and historic places and then flew to Cuzco and Macchu Piccu, where I got a brief taste of altitude sickness.

On the last day, when I arrived at the airport, officials detained me for a short while (remember I was a young dude back then, and drug smuggling was on everyone's minds). Two army guys took me into a room and told me to unbutton my shirt and undo my belt ... WELL! They started a body search that qualifies as sexual abuse! They groped me and poked fingers in places ... I was too stunned to complain. Yikes!

I have been to the Galapagos Islands in Ecuador.
On another trip, I was in Botswana and South Africa.

Haven't been on an exotic vacation, but the ultimate exotic vacation for me is AFRICA.

Would love to go on an African Safari, see the Mountain Gorillas of Rwanda, visit and see the tribes and african dancers of Tanzania and visit the spice markets of Zanzibar. Oh, and would like to visit Sierra Leon and Hear he African drum beats of the Ivory Coast.

I always wanted to go to Ethiopia. I hear there are these amazing 1,000 year old Christian churches there. I've been to Ethiopia/Eritrean restaurants here in Philly and I like the food, too!
