Another good option is to get someone you know and trust to live at your house while you're away.

Another idea--leave a radio on a talk station so anyone who comes through the door will hear voices.

I'm with Annerk. My first thought would be to get a friend or one of their kids to stay there. It sounds like you don't have pets, which simplifies things.

We don't do this right now because we are lucky enough that the neighbor who takes care of our pets for us is a city cop.... but depending on where you live, it might be a good idea to mention to local law enforcement that you will be away. Or neighborhood watch if you've got one.
