Count as an island any land surrounded by water, smaller than Australia. Count only if you have to get there by air or watercraft, but NOT an island that has a bridge going to it. For example, count Martha's Vineyard or Mackinac Island, but not Key West or Long Island. Count Sardinia or Newfoundland, but not Sicily or Prince Edward Island (unless you were there before they built the bridge). If you were on both (or one) of two islands connected by a bridge, count only one (e.g., Honshu/Shikoku, Japan)
Generally, I'd say don't count a rock that you waded out to in a stream, but if you want to pad your list and you can remember it, go ahead.
Oh gee, another pointless bit of trivia, but a fun way to waste some time:
- Prince Edward Island (before the bridge)
- Manitoulin Island (Lake Huron)
- Amherst Island (Lake Ontario)
- Vancouver Island
- Saltspring Island, BC
- Camano Island, WA
- Orcas Island, WA
- a bunch of Caribbean islands
- some Greek islands
- Britain
- Tahiti, Moorea, Bora Bora, Raiatea, Manihi, ...a bunch of island in French Polynesia

Well, I admittedly just glanced at the post. Perhaps the title of the thread should have been more specific. The rules are also weird: islands with bridge connections don't count, but islands with tunnel connections do? You can get from mainland China to Hong Kong via tunnel, but not bridge, ditto Great Britain to continental Europe.

Agree. An island is an island.
I'm sure I've been to less than a dozen, even counting Vancouver Island, Nantucket, Martha's Vineyard, and the Greek Islands I've visited. One of my favorites is Cumberland Island.
I live on on an island, but I guess it doesn't count because it has a bridge.
Several islands in the San Juan group, in WA state. About 8, total.
Bainbridge Island (WA)
Whidbey Island (WA)
Angel Island (San Francisco Bay)
Formosa
Orchid Island (belonging to Taiwan)
England (before the Chunnel)
Honshu, Japan
Sakhalin (Russia)
Greenland
Iceland
Vancouver Island
Staten Island (NY)
The Bay Islands, Honduras
The Galapagos (Ecuador)
New Zealand, north island
I'm surprised no one has mentioned the Hawaiian Islands.
