If I was in his situation that would have been the last thing I would have done but he said he enjoyed it and never regretted it and certainly could never do/afford it again.
Africa!? Ok.. Each to their own.
I've been on enough holidays to say that I wouldn't spend all that money on a holiday. Maybe a car.

We spent double that on our holiday this year and its not even expensive.

I save and then my mum eats the head off me!

Let's see what happens when you actually have to pay for your own travel instead of having your parents footing the bill.

You have a problem with people wanting to visit Africa?! Do you know anything at all about Africa? Because it doesn't interest you then it must not be interesting? Oh right, I forgot, you think Florida is one of the greatest places in the world.

A safari in an African country (that's photographic not shooting!) is one of the most amazing experiences!!

I agree with the 'wait until you're paying the bill' sentiment.

I don't have an unlimited budget, and will say give me a newer well-kept Ibis or Holiday Inn Express in a good location over something with more amenities on the fringe of nowhere any day. I don't go on vacation to stay in my room- goal is to only be there sleeping and showering.

What could possibly be so bad about a 3 star hotel? At 'worst' it would basically be like a room in an upper middle class house.

Its a question of priorities. There is no other way to put it. If you want it enough, you'll arrange the rest of your life so you can do it.

Fortunately, my wife and I do well in our respective jobs and we live in a state where the cost of living is not particularly high. This leaves us with a certain amount of discretionary income. The biggest issue we have is that we have a "lot" of priorities. Sending my kids to college is a big priority, so we have money set aside for that purpose. Another priority came about rather suddenly. We saw an opportunity when housing prices dipped back in 2009 to purchase a second home that we will probably retire in and we did that.

We have a list of travel destinations that we are whittling down. I constantly search for travel deals to the remaining places. Last year, I got quite a deal on a land/cruise package to Alaska and since that was on our list that's the one we took.

We have been to Washington, D.C. and Boston about four or five times in the past, but we had a unique opportunity this year to visit both destinations for about eight days total at very low cost and we jumped on that opportunity.

Next year, we are going to Germany for about two weeks to celebrate our thirtieth anniversary. I've mentioned that trip here before and I am well into planning it.

I like slumming it in a hostel. You meet interesting people. I don't care how many stars my hotel has as long as it's clean. All I want is a bed, toilet, sink, and shower, and air conditioning if I'm in a hot place. A hotel is just a place to sleep.
