It was a lot cheaper than boarding would have been, and the animals were in their normal surroundings and not exposed to the diseases other animals can carry. Win-Win for everyone.

Key for us is being self-employed in a business that is slow enough in summer to take a few weeks and go away. We aren't loaded, but do well enough to spend some $$ on int'l travel. Airfare across "the pond" has gotten so bad, that honestly, if we couldn't go for 2-3 weeks at a time, we'd probably stay stateside. Just not worth paying $1,000-1,500 per ticket for one week's vacation. That's where being self-employed comes in...we can take the time when we want, and while I do need to handle some minor work when away, it's manageable for the most part. It would be impossible if we worked in the corporate world.

Why do you say that? My husband works for a large corporation and I work for a small one. So far this year we took two weeks to travel to the South Seas and we've got a long weekend in the PNW coming up in October. We've already booked a two week Europe trip for next early spring. Two years ago it was three weeks in Europe.

Because we probably take off 5-6 weeks each year. I maxed at 4 weeks in the corporate world, and was unable to take 2-3 weeks at a time. If you can, awesome...but I think that is not often the case.

You're right. My own employer gives me a decent amount of PTO, but many don't. So of course it depends on the employer or the nature of your business. Either way, it's not a competition. I wish everyone I could have 5-6 weeks off per year (at least), then places would not be as crowded at any one particular time (like weekends and holidays).

My husband is up to almost seven weeks and I don't really have "vacation time." I just take what I feel I need. Two weeks away (with a bit of planning) is easy, although three gets trickier.

It's not the case on average. I now have 4 weeks of vacation thankfully & I have in the past taken a vacation that took me away for 3 weeks. Fortunately my employer is good about allowing large chunks of vacation time off but I know many many many people who either don't have a lot of vacation or if they do their employer looks down on them being gone for weeks at a time.

For us, our cost of living is fairly low. Since both of us are retired, we have all the time in the world. Our usual travels are Puerto Rico in the winter and around the states in the camper van in the summer.
