Ok, I am pretty sure I have already figured this out, but would like to be sure....
My husband and I are going to be in France for 3 weeks. We want to go to London for about 3 days of that time. France is part of the Schengen VIsa allowing for the passport free travel between participating countries, the U.K. is not (because they want to be difficult, at least that is my theory).
I am not able to find ANYWHERE that states the following would be an issue:
Arrive in France- spend 6 days. Leave France, get the exit stamp in the passport, enter the U.K. stay 3 days. Leave the U.K. and reenter France...the Schengen Visa allows 90-days of free travel in every 180 days...it does allow multiple entries if you leave areas covered by the treaty, correct?
Also, both my husband and I have U.S. Passports.
I hope this makes sense...and links to anything confirming this would be helpful.
As I mentioned, I am fairly sure this is fine, but as we will have a flight booked back home from France, would like to be able to return....

You can stay in France or any Schengen Country for 90 days without a Visa. In fact, Schengen Visa's do not apply to US Citizens.
Byt the way, the UK doesn't require a Visa for US Citizen's either. So I don't understand your comment about the UK making things more difficult. In fact, they make things easier by allowing you to leave a Schengen Country after 90 days, spending 91 days in the UK, then you can return to a Schengen Country without the need of any Visa.

Reason: Added the UK part.
Yet, you did not manage to answer my question. At all.
Can we enter France, stay for a week, enter the U.K., stay for 3 days, and then re-enter France? I am not able to find anything definitive on whether or not the 90 days is consecutive or can be broken up or whether or not the Schengen visa (that, despite your comment, we techincally DO have by virtue of the US Passport) is valid for multiple entries in the 180-days...

The answer is right there. Yes, as long as you don't stay longer then 90 days you can leave and come back as many times as you want. There is no restrictions. Fly to Paris, fly home, fly back, fly home, go to the UK, go back. So long as you don't stay over 90 days, there is no restriction.
If the answer is so important to you, contact the French embassy and not strangers on the Internet.
I can make up any answer that I think will make you happy, or I could tell you how it worked when I was there 10 years ago, but that doesn't guarantee you can cross a border.

YES..You are probably going to get lots of answer here that will confuse you further. Easy answer is YES, all you need is your passport. Don't worry worry abut the Schengen visa, don't even think about it. It is not relevant to you.
That is what we thought...do you have somewhere that is in writing?
You don't need anything in writing. Make sure you have a valid US passport with sufficient room for stamps. That is all you will need. You do not need a visa of any kind.
It is possible that the UK immigration officer will ask you a couple of questions like purpose of visit, how long and where you are staying. It is extremely unlikely that the French will ask anything.
As a precaution, take a print out of your travel itinerary to prove you have a return ticket to the USA. Other than that, have a great time.
