If they don't have a German bank account to deposit into, almost impossible.

Just a little too late, I'm just back from the Post Office. They're on their own.

They can deposit the check and wait until it clears. It might take weeks. There will be a large fee for cashing the check and another large fee for converting the currency.

Personally, because my credit cards all are good overseas and offer an excellent currency conversion rate, my first step would be to call my credit card companies and see if I could buy a preloaded credit card to send that they could use to get cash out of an ATM.

Some of the large currency exchange companies also offer some great credit cards and they might have a good way to send money.

Then there are all the "send money companies". Dozens of them move money cheaply to south of the border. Probably, there are companies that move money to Europe. Google would probably find them. Called Giro, I think.

There’s a difference between “cashing” and “depositing” a check.

Too late this time, but I would avoid any type of “send money companies.” They often charge a large fee—and in some cases a percentage—which can be very expensive.

The fastest way is a bank-to-bank wire transfer. You need the German account information, but a wire allows you do make a deposit directly into an account.

You could also go to your bank branch and get a cashier’s check denominated in Euros—which would have a significantly shorter “hold period” than a personal check denominated in US$.

Of course all of this presupposes it’s a large check and the recipient needs the funds quickly. If it’s a smallish check, it’s probably not worth the effort.

The other thing you can do is Paypal the money to them. They can then move it to their US based checking account and withdraw cash from a German ATM.

OK, Das Check has arrived in Berlin just hours too late to get Obama to cash it. We shall see.

Could you elaborate on that method of sending money as my daughter is touring Europe at the moment and there is always the possibility of her needing extra funds.
Or if any one else has money transfer ideas..
Thanks

Actually i suppose in my case the easiest way is to walk down to her bank and deposit whatever she needs into her account, then she can withdraw via ATM.

In your case, absolutely that's the best way to do it.
